Following is a list and brief description of our competition categories.
Lifestyle
A colour or monochrome image that captures people in situations or events. The image should tell the story of the person while documenting the scene. Examples could include, events, family, street, activities and editorial images.
Portraiture
A colour or monochrome image whereby the main subject of the photo is a person or group of people. This should be an intimate shot that clearly captures the expression or emotion of the person(s) being photographed. Both formal or informal portraits of people sitting in studio or engaged in a real world setting are acceptable. You must include signed model releases for any individuals in these photos unless taken at a public event, during which participants can expect to be photographed.
Creatures & Critters
A colour or monochrome image whose main subject is an animal or insect. This can include pictures of pets, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, wildlife, zoo life, farm / domesticated animals, etc.
Flowers & Foliage
A colour or monochrome image containing flower or plant species, leaves, trees, or gardens - either wild or horticultural specimens.

Objects & Abstracts
Object - A colour or monochrome image depicting a specific recognizable, material item or thing, usually a tight composition that focuses on subject detail.
Abstract - A colour or monochrome image capturing forms or shapes that are independent of visual reference. The image does not represent a subject in a literal way, but communicates through form, colour & curves rather than image detail.

Scenery
A colour or monochrome image representing natural, geographical or urban scenery. The image should demonstrate the natural beauty of the geographic features of the world around us. This includes landscapes, seascapes, shorelines and cityscapes.
Architecture
A colour or monochrome image of any man-made structure or building. This includes images that may capture close-up details or specific architectural features.
Creative
An imaginative image created by the author, achieved by altering the reality of the photograph for artistic purposes. It includes unlimited image manipulation and modification using any tones. Creative or compound photographs incorporating elements from several images must ensure that all source material is the sole work of the author.
Note: Images entered into other categories which appear unrealistic due to image manipulation may be placed into this category at the discretion of the PhotoArt committee.

Youth (Grades 9-12) - Open
A colour or monochrome image featuring any subject,
entered by a youth in grades 9 through 12.
Children's (Grades K-5) or (Grades 6-8) - Open
1 image, featuring any subject matter entered by a child in grades K though 8.
